Sierra Leone goes metric after 49 years

In Sierra Leone is metrication important, but food is important even more

FREETOWN (AFP) – Sierra Leone's parliament has passed a law adopting the metric system of measurement after 49 years using the British imperial system, Trade and Industry Minister David Carew told reporters Friday.
"The law modifies the weight and measures act of 1961 under which the imperial unit of measurement had been used and now adopts the universally accepted metric system," he said.
"The law will enable us to get the correct measurement of foodstuffs and other commodities since measurement terminologies like pound and mile have been replaced with kilometres and kilograms."

Petrol stations in the UAE are given until April 1 to comply with the government directive to sell fuel by the litre instead of gallon as a unit of measurement.

"January is the starting point and they are given four months to make the shift," Dr Rashid Ahmad bin Fahad, Chairman of Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology, (Esma) told Emirates Business. "They should be able to do it before April 1. Four months is more than a reasonable period of time."

The European parliament on Tuesday 16 Dec 2008 saved the pint and mile from EU extinction, saving British and Irish drinkers from having to order half litres or drive at under 110 kilometres per hour.
Under the measure, agreed without a vote at a second reading in the Strasbourg chamber, traders will also be able to display imperial and metric measurements side by side in shops and elsewhere.
